The first of seven events that will be held at Marina Martinique this summer will take in Jeffreys Bay on Sunday.
Swimmers will be spoilt with choice as there are a number of events on offer, ranging from the gruelling 10 km to the entry level 400m for those who are new to swimming in open water.
Marina Martinique is regarded as one of the finest open water swim venues in the world and a number of Olympic swimmers have raced and trained in the salt water canals over the past few years.
Brenton Williams, from the JBay Open Water Swim Club, who will be hosting the events, says that the Marina canals are perfect for open water swimming.
“There is fresh salt water being pumped into the canals continually and one does not have to worry about tides or currents or even wildlife while swimming,” said Williams.
The EC Swim Series is organised by Zsports and sanctioned by Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics, which means that swimmers can get national qualifying times, recognised by Swim South Africa.
The Mayor of Kouga, Elza Van Lingen said that it is pleasing to see tourism being boosted by events like the EC Swim Series.
“Jeffreys Bay is famous for the perfect waves that break along our coast and it is great to see a world class venue like Marina Martinique hosting one of the biggest open water swim events in South Africa,” said Van Lingen.
