The swim season kicks off in Jeffreys Bay this weekend with the first event of the Metsi Open Water Swim Series at Marina Martinique on Sunday.
Swimmers have a choice of distances ranging from the gruelling 10 km swim, 5 km, 3km, 1km, 500m and a short bank to bank swim for the young swimmers.
The series is sanctioned by EP Aquatics and swimmers will be able to record South African qualifying times.
Entries are open on www.swimmingplus.com
There is a lot of interest in the 5 km swim as Metsi Water Solutions have put up prize money in this event.
There is R 1 500 up for grabs for the winning male and female swimmers with R 1000 and R 500 for 2nd and 3rd places.
Event organiser Brenton Williams said that the 5 K is a world championship event and the distance will be promoted this season to draw top open water swimmers to compete in Jeffreys Bay.
“The Metsi Open Water Swim Series is designed to attract swimmers to compete in the events that count and we will be building up towards the Olympic distance 10 KM swim next season.
“Our goal is to ensure that swimmers from the Eastern Cape have every opportunity to be ready by the time the 10 K trials are held for the 2016 Olympics which will be held in Brazil.”
There will be a training session at 5.45 pm on Thursday evening at Marina Martinique for all swimmers who would like to get a practice swim in before the event on Sunday.
