The site, known as Algoa 1, is situated a mere two km offshore and would have impacted negatively on the tourism industry in Port Elizabeth.

The Airport Company of South Africa (ACSA) raised concerns about potential risks of bird collisions with air traffic to and from the Port Elizabeth Airport.

Molewa also made mention of an online petition that gathered more than 17 000 signatures, all opposing the fish farm.

Molewa announced the decision on Thursday following a deluge of opposition to the proposal from stakeholders in Nelson Mandela Bay who said they were not opposed to the idea of a fish farm but were opposed to where it was going to be situated.

The site known as Algoa 5, which is situated four km offshore from the Sundays River will now be explored as a possible location for a fish farm.

It is however, situated within the Addo Marine Protected Area.
