Newman dominates Metsi Open Water Swim

Swimmers from all over the Eastern Cape took advantage of the perfect weather to take part in round 3 of the Metsi Open Water Swim Series, held at Marina Martinique on Sunday.

The 10 Km swim was the first event of the day, with Dylan Smith winning the men’s division, while Rebecca Newman added another title to her name by winning the women’s race in a South African National qualifying time.

The 3 km and 5 km swimmers were the next to get into the 24C water with a number of swimmers pushing hard and getting their national qualifying times.

Daniel Jones won the 5 K event from Byron Lockett and Ian Venter.

St Francis Bay swimmer Amica de Jager won the women’s race from Hannah Haswell and Kirsten Marriott.

Teko Khetsi won the 3 km swim from Rudi Schoeman and Andrew Masterson, while Jessica Cantor was the first lady home from Khanya Jack and Denise Bosman.

Daniel Jones followed up his 5 K victory by winning the 1 K swim as well. Creedence Pattinson and Jason Jones were the runners up.

Kaylene Corbett won the women’s division from Erica Scheepers and Denise Bosman.

Jeffreys Bay swimmers Abriella and Isattayah Bredell dominated the bank to bank swim coming first and second respectively.

The next open water swim event is the Metsi Eastern Province Open Water Swim Champs, which will be held at Marina Martinique on 8 February. The event is sponsored by Metsi Water Solutions.

Open water swim training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5:45 Pm from Infood Blu at Marina Martinique.

Learn to swim lessons and squad training starts next week at Edge Fitness Club in the indoor heated pool.
