Helen Zille has announced that she will not be seeking re-election at the DA’s federal congress which takes place in May in Port Elizabeth.

“I have thought long and hard about what it means for my young family. And I have had to consider whether the timing is right.

“In the end, I decided to accept this nomination because it is a unique opportunity to restore hope in the nation’s future,” said Maimane.

His rise to national attention began in 2011, when he was elected to be the DA’s mayoral candidate in the 2011 South African municipal election.

In that Election, Maimane helped to grow the party’s voter base considerably, but did not succeed in being elected as Mayor.
