Its that time of the year again when locals and holidaymakers alike dust off their swim goggles and take on the challenge of swimming a Mile in the pristine canals of Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay.
The action starts on Saturday morning when the swimmers will be faced with a double mile through the canals. What makes the Marina Mile so special is the swimmers go past houses and are cheered on by the residents of the Marina who all enter into the spirit of the event.
Then the bank to bank swim and the 500m swim will take place. Both these events are for novice open water swimmers and there is no entry fee for the bank to bank swim.
The action will hot up at 11.30 am when the women’s mile takes to the water. Olympian Jessica Roux could be in the starting line up to defend her title as queen of the Marina Mile.
At 12.30 the mens mile will start and this is always a fast race in the salt canals of Marina Martinique.
Core Surf Gear has put up R 1000 in prize money for the winnners of the Marina Mile events.
Sunday 23 December will see the big guns in South African open water swimming circles take on the daunting 25 K swim, with shorter 10 K and 5 K events also taking place.
All the swims will take place at the old shark aquarium at the Marina.
