Man bitten by a shark near Arniston

A 43 year man was bitten by a shark while spear fishing offshore of Ryspunt yesterday afternoon.

He was brought back to the harbour in Arniston aboard the boat that he and friends were spearfishing from.

The man, who comes from Betties Bay, suffered bite wounds following the shark encounter, believed to be with a Great White shark, said the NSRI in a statement.

He was bitten on the left leg and left thigh and suffered a hand injury while fending off the shark with his right hand.

The man was stabilised at a Bredasdorp hospital before being airlifted by the EMS/AMS Skymed helicopter in a serious but stable condition to a hospital in Cape Town.
