The challenge of taking on the splendour of the Karoo through thickly vegetated valleys, kloofs and river beds was accepted by a group of trail runners this weekend at the Noorspoort Guest Farm.
Situated just outside the farming village of Steytlerville, the Noorspoort Lekker Trial Run was held in sunny conditions on Saturday morning on the farm owned by the family of the legendary rugby Springbok, Doctor Danie Craven.
Many of the runners arrived on the Friday evening and were treated to the warm hospitality of George and Anna Marie Craven who served traditional farm food to their guests.
Both the 10 K and 20 K trail runs started simultaneously on Saturday morning and Karoo runner Christo Muller set a cracking pace from the start of the event.
Muller was closely followed by Juan Cordier for the entire race but remained in front to win in a time of 1:31:34 and be crowned the first ever winner of the Noorspoort Lekker Trail Run.
Sally Waterworth kept a steady pace throughout the race to win the women’s division in a time of 1:52:21.
“It was a great race, with lots of different challenges being presented along the way,” said Waterworth after her victory.
“The river bed towards the end was particularly hard as you could see the guest house where the finish was, but it was slow going running in the sand and we also ran through a section where there was some clay which stuck to our running shoes.
The Noorspoort Trail Run is a great event and I will be back next year for sure,” added Waterworth.
Kevin Grey, the organiser of the event said he was very happy with the turnout for the Lekker Trail Run as well as the route itself.
“There were technical sections that had to be negotiated, while the route was also great for runners or walkers who wanted to enjoy the natural beauty of the Karoo,” said Grey.
Runners who stayed over at Noorspoort after the event were treated to a traditional South African braai at ‘Doc se Hok’, a shed on the farm that has been converted to a restaurant and dance hall.
After eating succulent Karoo lamb chops, the tired runners managed to party hard on the dance floor until late that night.
The Noorspoort Lekker Trail Run is an annual event that will take place from the Noorspoort Guest Farm every year.
