Looting of foreign owned shops continues in PE

Police have intensified their presence in the Port Elizabeth area after widespread looting which started on Sunday.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Miranda Mills says the violence has spilled over to Missionvale, where eight more shops have been looted.

Police have also made seven arrests. Mainly foreign-owned shops have been targeted. Police are assisting foreign nationals to getting to areas of safety.

Police re-inforcements have been called in from outside the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

They’ll remain in New Brighton, Zwide, Missionvale, Soweto-On-Sea, and KwaZakhele.

At least 10 shops in KwaZakhele and New Brighton were attacked at the weekend.

Brigadier Mills added that two shops were looted and burnt in Ntintili street, and a car parked outside was also set alight.

Several other shops were targeted following the arrest of a Somali man accused of shooting dead a man outside a shop on Saturday evening.
