Lindi Mayer overcame scorching heat to finish in 2nd place at the South African Triathlon Championships in Port Elizabeth yesterday. This means that Lindi will be eligible for selection for the SA team.

Kobus Joubert was the other local athlete who took part in the SA Champs but was beset with bad luck when he had a puncture on the bike part of the race.

Jbaynews caught up with Lindi.

How did you gain selection to the EP Team?

I competed in EP Champs in PE on 13 Feb 2011. I came 2nd in my age group and the top 8 are selected to represent EP and am so stoked with my race at SA Champs and where I finished.

What made you get into triathlon?

I am foremost a runner. When I got injured year before last I stopped running all together and started swimming to try strengthen my core…and loved it! I think being a surfer helped a lot! After that I heard about the Iron Man 70.3 and decided that was my next goal! So next on the list was to get cycling! I completed the Iron Man in East London on 23 January this year and was hooked!

What do you enjoy about the sport?

I enjoy multi-sport in general. I think cross training is the best way to go even if one doesn’t do triathlon. Doing more than one sport is beneficial all round. What I enjoy about triathlon specifically is the endurance required to do well & the challenge…and of course it finishes with my favourite discipline, running. Most triathletes can’t run well so I have an advantage here.

What do you find tough about the sport?

Getting through the transition as quickly as possible!

What are your goals?

Making the SA team and for 2012 it’s the Iron Man 70.3 and the Full Iron Man.

What do you do between training?

I work at Victory Media, part of Victory Christian Church

Why do you enjoy living in Jeffreys Bay?

I love living in J’Bay for two reasons…the people & the lifestyle

Parting words?

I would like to encourage people who are not yet active…there is so much opportunity to get going (all sports clubs are listed in the local papers)… join a club for whatever sport you are interested in and just take the first step! It won’t be as tough as you think and you will meet awesome people and end up having fun…while getting fit!
