The Eastern Province Open Water Swim Champs were held at Marina Martinique in windy and rainy conditions over the weekend.

Caro De Jager (12) was the first local swimmer to win a medal when she claimed bronze in the 3 K race and came second in her age group.

JC Van Wyk had a good swim to win gold in the Masters 3 K race in his age division while Humansdorp swimmers Alan and Francis Searle both won their respective age divisions as well. Helene Botha swimming her first 3 K race also won her division.

Brenton Williams was the second man home in the 10 K swim and won the Masters 10 K race for the second year running. John Day, showed guts to finish his first ever 10 K swim and claimed 3rd place in his age group.

Caro De Jager then took silver in the 1 K swim, and also won the U/13 age group, ending off a good weekend for the young swimmer.

Seth de Swart swam a fast race to come 3rd overall in the 1 K and claimed gold in the U/13 category, while mom Anne won the masters race and his dad Rencke took silver in the men’s division in his age group.

The Ellis brothers had their traditional tussle in the 500m swim, with Danie taking silver from Pieter who had to settle for the bronze medal in this race.

Rebecca Baard had a great swim to win the women’s race in the 500m from another local swimmer Michelle Strydom.

Kyle De Villiers and Wian Moore also had good swims and with more experience will challenge for medals in the future.

Richard Janse van Rensburg & Noah de Swart determined to finish the bank to bank swim

Kaylyn Wooding (9) won the girls race in the increasingly popular bank to bank race while Hayley Van Niekerk won the U/8 division from Abbeygail Janse Van Rensburg.

Aiden De Villiers (5) was the surprise package of the bank to bank swim when he beat many of the older kids to come 3rd in the boy’s race. Richard Janse Van Rensburg and Noah De Swart also braved the conditions and completed the swim.

Open water swim queen Jessica Roux who won both the 10 K and the 5 K events at the EP Champs will be leaving to train in Durban as part of her build up to the 2012 Olympic trials.

The next swim event at Marina Martinique takes place on 26/27 March.
