There was a strong sense of belief that the DA will win Kouga in 2016 amongst the 500 delegates from all over the Eastern Cape, who gathered in Jeffreys Bay this weekend for the party’s Provincial Congress.
Helen Zille said that Kouga was one of 5 Municipality’s that will fall to the DA in the local elections in 2016.
“Our performance here in Kouga in the national and provincial election – where we brought the ANC under 50% – shows that the municipality is ready to return to the DA.
Back in 2000, we won Kouga fair and square, but lost it two years later through floor crossing.
But now the people of Jeffreys Bay, of Humansdorp, of Patensie, of St Francis Bay, of Oyster Bay, of Loerie have had enough.
Kouga is once again ready for a DA government,” said Zille.
Zille also said that the Eastern Cape should be the bread basket of Southern Africa, when one looks at al the resources contained within the Province.
“Yet the Eastern Cape has an unemployment rate of 44 % and 250 000 people have left the Province to look for work elsewhere,” added Zille.
“This is the result of a corrupt and inefficient government in the Eastern Cape and the DA is growing from the west of the Province to the East and the Eastern Cape is no longer an ANC stronghold,” concluded Zille.
The other strategic Municipalities that the DA believes it can win are Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Baviaans, Kou Kamma and Camdamboo.
The DA already governs in Baviaans.
