The greater St Francis Bay region was declared a disaster area at a special meeting of the Kouga Council today.
The bush around St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis has been on fire since Saturday 23 January and houses at Rebelsrus were also burnt down.
Fire-fighters have been working around the clock for nearly a week to try tame the beast.
The first rains are being predicted for 3 February, which will help in stopping continual flare ups of the fire.
Resources have been pulled into Kouga from neighbouring Municipalities, Eskom and the Air Force.
A number of community organisations have also assisted with the funding of helicopters, as well as feeding and looking after the fire-fighters.
The Kouga Council resolved to submit an application to the Eastern Cape Disaster Management Centre for the Premier of the Province to declare Greater St Francis Bay a Disaster Area in order to condone and approve all the expenditure incurred in fighting the fire.
