History has been made in Kouga with the appointment of Daphne Kettledas as the first ever female Mayor of the Municipality.
Booi Koerat, the existing Mayor resigned, saying that poor health was the reason he had decided to quit, with just one year left of his term.
The DA, who are official opposition in Kouga, nominated Chimpie Cawood as their candidate for Mayor.
However, the ANC had enough votes to ensure Kettledas was appointed and that Koerat would be accommodated on an expanded Mayoral Committee.
In her first act as mayoress, Kettledas kept the mayoral committee the same, with the addition of Koerat as councillor in charge of Special Programmes in the Office of the Mayor.
The rest of the mayoral committee are Vernon Stuurman (finance, admin, monitoring and evaluation); Thandeka Maseti (social services); Phumzile Oliphant (local economic development); Virginia Camealio-Benjamin (tourism and creative industries) and Patrick Kota (infrastructure, planning and development).
