At lunchtime yesterday, the Jeffreys Bay NSRI were activated following eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress in the sea in front of Waterkant Street, Jeffreys Bay.
“On arrival on-scene we found that unidentified bystanders had already managed to rescue Frans Gerber, a 47 year old man from the surf and they had initiated CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) on the man.
The paramedics took over CPR but all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted and the paramedics declared the man dead on-scene” said Rieghard Janse van Rensburg, the NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander .
Family of the man, who were on the scene, are being counselled by Police Trauma Counsellors.
The body of Gerber, who is from Joubertina in the Eastern Cape, has been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.
It is unknown what caused him to get into difficulty in the surf before he was rescued from the water by bystanders.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
