A Tanzanian asylum seeker living in Jeffreys Bay has been granted bail of R 1000 after being arrested for allegedly being found in the possession of heroin and dagga.

Siaba Kamba Samata must report to the Jeffreys Bay Police Station twice a week according to a report by the Daily Dispatch.

Magistrate Bharat Hansjee of the East London Magistrate’s Court ordered that co-accused Mohammed Jaffu remains in custody as he was considered a flight risk.

Jaffu also has a previous drug related conviction, for which he received a suspended sentence. It alleged that the foreign nationals were caught with almost 4 kg of dagga and 103g of pure heroin in East London.

Both have pleaded not guilty to a charge of dealing in drugs, and the case has been postponed until 18 February.

This incident follows an outcry from Jeffreys Bay residents at a Community Police Forum (CPF) meeting last week where foreign nationals were fingered as being the primary drug dealers in the town.
