The JBU Surf Club beat all comers from around South Africa to win the 2014 Billabong SA Interclub Championships which took place in sunny conditions and 2-4 foot waves at Kitchen Windows in Jeffreys Bay over the weekend.
Twelve teams representing eleven Surf Clubs from all parts of the South African coast participated in the second annual Interclub Surfing Championships.
The JBU started slowly on Day 1, coming second to the West Coast Boardriders Club, with local surf coach Kelvin Zehmke keeping the locals in the hunt with an air reverse.
However, things settled down on Sunday with Kitchen Window local Rewaldo Abersalie getting some high scoring rides and with Shannon Ainslie and Zehmke going for the big moves, the JBU made a steady march to the finals.
“I am so stoked and am glad that all the big moves paid off,” said Kelvin after the JBU emerged victorious.
Super coach, and top JBay shaper Thys Strydom kept the troops motivated and focused on the task on hand.
Strydom, from Rebel Surfboards supports many of the Pellsrus groms and kept their nerves under control as the pressure mounted.
The JBU’s 171.2 point score in the final was just over 6 points higher than second placed CYOH Surf Club from Port Elizabeth.
There was massive support from the beach lead by JBU stalwarts Koffie Jacobs, Frank Knuckles, Arthur Joubert and Tyrone Smith.
Knuckles lead the war cry of “who beat you…..the JBU” as the well respected local outfit swept all before them.
“We appreciate the great support from the crowds and the tag team format made it very exciting for the spectators,” said JBU president Arthur Joubert.
As national Club champions, the JBU have earned the right to host the event next year which means everyone will once again travel to JBay to try topple the JBay locals.
“The trophy is going to stay in JBay for many more years to come and we are looking forward to defending our title,” added Joubert.
