A quick trip to the Fig Tree Village, a shopping centre just off the William Moffett Expressway, saw a young Jeffreys Bay woman having her car stolen from her at gunpoint last weekend.
The incident took place just days before schoolteacher Jayde Panayioutou was kidnapped and killed in Port Elizabeth.
Philene Van Niekerk, a 19 yr old former student at Nico Malan High School was walking towards her car around 6 pm last Saturday evening when she noticed two suspicious looking men near her car.
” I didnt want to feel paranoid so carried on towards my car. Next thing there was a gun being held against my body and they were demanding my car keys,” said Philene.
“Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. There were people around, even a security guard but nobody could see the gun and didnt realise what was happening.
The guy holding the gun demanded my cell phone as the the other criminal was trying to start my car. My phone was under my wallet in my hand and the thought that came to my mind was that they getting my car, I am not going to give them my cell phone as well,” said the brave woman.
“Eventually the car was started and the thug with the gun ran around, got into the passenger seat of my car and they drove away.
They were professional and kept calm throughout the incident so I realised I must stay calm as well as they could easily kill me,” said Philene.
Her car, a white Ford Tracer with registration DZY 722 EC is still missing.
