JBay Open expected to take place on Saturday

Small and inconsistent surf on offer at Jeffreys Bay has prompted contest officials to call a lay day at the J-Bay Open, stop No. 6 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT).

With the swell expected to fill in through the afternoon, the stage is set for an exciting final day of competition at the J-Bay Open tomorrow(Saturday).

“Unfortunately there aren’t enough waves right now to get the Quarterfinals underway,” said WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow. “There are some sets, which is a positive sign for tomorrow, but not enough for today. We’re looking at a much better morning tomorrow with sets hopefully in the overhead range so we plan to finish the event then.”

Event organisers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. to assess the conditions and make the next call.

After a slow start early on Friday we are expecting  inconsistent SW swell to build over the afternoon with moderate to strong offshore winds.

SW swell continues Saturday with offshore winds through the morning. Lingering swell and less favorable winds/conditions are expected for Sunday.

Event organisers will reconvene tomorrow (Friday) morning at 7:30 a.m. to assess the conditions and make the next call.

When competition resumes, the remaining the second of the quarterfinals will feature 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA) againstJosh Kerr (AUS), with the winner advancing to semi-final clash against John John Florence (HAW).

Julian Wilson (AUS) takes on 2014 WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) and three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) will battleFilipe Toledo (BRA) with the winners of those bouts meeting in the second semi-final.

The JBay Open has a competitive window from July 6 – 17, 2016 and forms part of the annual JBay Winterfest
