A dream has come true for Pellsrus surfer Joshe Faulkner, who has been selected for the South African Junior Surf Team, following a three day training camp in Cape Town.
Joshe is the first youngster from Pellrus Primary School to receive national colours for surfing and the community is very proud of him.
“I am super excited and cannot wait to surf for my country in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Ecuador,” said Joshe.
The championships take place from 5 -14 April and Joshe is the only surfer from the Eastern Cape that made the national team.
The team is made up of eight boys and four girls in the Under 18 and Under 16 age divisions and they will join the 300 athletes from over 30 countries at La Fae Beach in Salinas, Ecuador for the biggest international junior surfing championship in the world.
Joshe is sponsored by the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm as well as Billabong and is a member of the JBU Surf Club.
“We are very proud of Joshe for his dedication to his sport and overjoyed that he will be competing in this international event amongst some of the world’s top athletes,” said Mark Pickering, General Manager of Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm.
The JBU have been very supportive of Joshe and he rides Rebel Surfboards, shaped by Thys Strydom.
“Joshe has worked really hard and the entire community is very proud of him,” said Strydom.
Prior to the ISA World Junior Championships, Joshe will surf against New Zealand to contest the annually run ‘SANZ’ Trophy held between the two teams.
South Africa dominated the head-to-head match-up up until 2013 when New Zealand pulled off a narrow win in Nicaragua.
The two teams use this international “friendly” to fine tune their competitive strategies only days out from the main event.
A fund raiser will be held at Bay Pasta at 6 pm tonight (Thursday 6 March) to help Joshe raise funds for the trip.
Surf South Africa has been unable to find a sponsor to fully fund the team and Joshe’s family is not in a position to pay for the trip themselves.
Donations can be handed in at Core Surf Shop or at Rebel Surfboards.
