The Rotary club of Jeffreys Bay and Spirals Studio have started a recycle swop shop along the lines of a shop established in Hermanus by Marilyn Van Der Velde in Hermanus.

The first recycling day at Pellsrus Primary School saw 150 children with bags and bags full of rubbish that they had personally collected.  Volunteers from Rotary and Spirals Yoga Studio helped them to sort the rubbish in either plastic, glass, tins or paper which then got weighed and tokens handed out according to weight.

Typically three kg of plastic would entitle a child to three tokens. The kids could then go “shop” at the makeshift shop with their tokens. Most kids bought pencils, pens, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and food for their family.

The kids quickly understood the system with some kids returning two or three times.

Environman then collected the trash and reported the following:

Tins – 10 kg, paper -14 kg, glass – 161 kg, plastic – 228kg.

This is an ongoing project and will happen every Monday afternoon at 14h00.  All children under the age of 13 are invited to bring their trash on Mondays between 14h00 and 16h00.  Anyone who wants to get involved can contact Carina on 079 513 5844 or deflamingh@live.co.za.
