JBay Caravan Park to be sold

Family  holidays spent at the tranquil Jeffreys Bay Caravan Park, with holiday makers lying in bed while watching dolphins go by or enjoying a braai with the sound of waves crashing against the rocks, will soon be something of the past.

The Kouga Express has reported that the Kouga Municipality is set to alienate the land the Jeffreys Bay Caravan Park is situated on.

The proposal to sell the land valued at over R6 million to a private developer, was approved at a recent Council meeting in Jeffreys Bay. At the meeting members of the DA requested that an alternative piece of land be made available for a new caravan park, preferably close to the beach.

According to municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, Council is of the view that the land is currently underutilised as a caravan park and that it can be of more value as a whole as a private development to Jeffreys Bay and the town’s economy.

“Council will identify another piece of land for a caravan park, should the current land being used be alienated,” says Randall.

“Possibilities include the Kabeljous lagoon area and the open land opposite Caltex Wavelands in St Francis Street, but there are no fixed proposals as yet.”

According to Randall, the current employees will be employed elsewhere within their directorate, Social Services.

The alienation process can take between three to six months.

The Ben Marais Caravan Park in Humansdorp is also up for sale and is currently with the bid committees, according to Randall. The new proposed development will include an office park, shopping centre, residential units, filling station, truck inn and a taxi rank.

Municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, says that the new owners will decide what to construct on the premises, but they will have to keep in line with the categories that are listed on the tender documents.
