What does Christmas mean to you? For many people it is a time for unwinding with family and friends and in South Africa hundreds of thousands of holiday makers will soon begin their annual pilgrimage to the coast lands of the country.

Christmas is a time of togetherness and of reconnecting with loved ones who often have not been seen since the previous December. Whatever one’s spiritual persuasion is, humanity seems to stop to enjoy the season of goodwill; no matter how fleeting it is, before the realities of life again crowd in upon us.

Christmas is an exciting time for children especially. It is a time when kids get spoilt and a time when the adults in their lives can splash out and give them special gifts like that long awaited bicycle or that must have doll.

Yet there are many children in the world today for whom Christmas is not such a joyous occasion. There are children who will not be filling their stomachs with a traditional Christmas meal and there will be many more who will not even receive a present, not even a single gift.

Tree of Joy

Four years ago, the Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay started to do something about the fact that there are children within our community who do not get anything at Christmas.

20 youngsters received gifts that Christmas and in a few years the number of children who have been identified as not being fortunate enough to receive a present has reached 500.

From scholars at Jeffreys Bay Primary School to orphans who are looked after by various organizations within the town, the Rotary Club is determined to make a difference and will be setting up a Tree of Joy this weekend at both Checkers in the Equinox Mall and Spar in Da Gama Road to give the community an opportunity to make this a special Christmas in the lives of local children.

The Rotary will be at the shopping centers from 9 am until 3 pm on both the 13 and 14 November.

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Phone Margot Speed on 084 643 5379 for further information on how you can make a difference this Christmas.
