Tranquil picnic spots, caravan stands and lush greenery will soon make way for a shopping centre, office park and a filling station.
The Kouga Municipality is in the process of inviting tenders for the disposal of the Ben Marais Caravan Park situated in Humansdorp. The new development will include an office park, shopping centre, residential units, filling station, truck inn and a taxi rank.
According to municipal spokesperson Mfundo Sobele, the caravan park is currently not viable and is costing the municipality more money to run than what it is generating.
“The Ben Marais Caravan Park is one of the pieces of land that the municipality has identified for disposal after a Council process of alienating land that is regarded as not necessarily needed for service delivery,” says Mfundo.
“Monies made from sales of such pieces of land would go towards acceleration of service delivery.”
According to Mfundo, the new owners will decide what to construct on the premises, but they will have to keep in line with the categories that are listed on the tender documents.
“Roughly speaking, one would tender to buy the property from the municipality. How long they would take to build and the nature of the new structures would be entirely up to the new owners.”

All tenders in a sealed envelope endorsed “Notice NO: 160/2014: Sale of Erf 353, Humansdorp” must be placed in the Tender Box in the foyer at the municipal offices at 33 Da Gama Road in Jeffreys Bay at 12 noon on January 30.
