The world Surf League (WSL) has announced the heats for Round One of the ’16 JBay Open.
Jeffreys Bay surfer Steven Sawyer, who recently won the JBU Supertrial is scheduled to surf in heat 6 against current rankings leader Matt Wilkinson in which should be a great battle of backhand attacks at Supertubes.
“I have wanted to surf the JBay Open for my whole life and am stoked to get the opportunity,” said Sawyer after his victory at the Supertrial, which earned him a wild card entry into the main event.
Former JBay Open champion Jordy Smith is scheduled to surf in Heat 9 and will be looking at getting a solid result in Jeffreys Bay. Jordy is currently ranked 10th in the world.
Crowd favourite Kelly Slater will hit the line up in heat number 7, while Mick Fanning will make his return to Jeffreys Bay in Heat 1.
The JBay Open forms part of the annual JBay WInterfest, presented by Woodlands Diary, with a vast array of events on offer, including a Mountain Bike Race, an extreme open water swim in sub 15C water and a Music Festival.
