Greg Emslie continued his domination of South African surfing by clinching the title in the 4A-Rated, R40 000 Captain Morgan Spiced Gold Buccaneers Surf Classic at Eastern Beach in East London on Sunday.
The 34 year-old former ASP World Tour campaigner and reigning Surfing South Africa (SSA) Pro Surf Tour (PST) champion was in tune with the shifty one metre waves and light onshore winds in the final, using all his local knowledge and exceptional surfing skills to post an excellent two-wave heat tally of 15.75 out of 20.
Beyrick de Vries, with 9.75 points, grabbed the runner-up spot ahead of fellow Umhlanga local Chris Leppan with Scottburgh’s Casey Grant placing fourth in a top class final that had the spectators at the highest rated contest to be staged in East London in a decade hooting and cheering for their favourite.
The victory earned Emslie R12 000 and 1 300 points giving him the early lead in the 2011 PST rankings while Leppan was adjudged to be the Most Radical Pro surfer in the event.
Equal fifth place went to Dale Staples (St Francis Bay) and Nick Godfrey (Cape St Francis) who finished in third place in their respective semifinal heats. Equal seventh were Stanley Badger (Durban) and Davey Brand (Kommetjie).
