A 40 year old Durban fisherman was swept out to sea by rip currents and drowned while taking part in a fishing competition at Hole in the Wall, Transkei.
The NSRI were alerted by other fishermen on Saturday morning that the man had been engulfed by waves while landing his catch in shallow surf.
Fellow anglers had attempting to rescue the man by throwing rope towards him but he was swept out to sea.
An EC Government Health EMS rescue helicopter, the SA Police Services and a Police K-9 Search and Rescue team were activated.
Upon arrival on the scene a search commenced for the angler missing in the surf and during the search operation the body of the man was located and recovered from the water and brought to shore where paramedics declared the man deceased.
The body of the man has been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.
