The event forms part of a national series that takes place in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, with Jeffreys Bay being the venue for the Eastern Cape leg of the series.

Swims on offer range from the standard 1 mile swim up to the 12 mile challenge.

The main event is the 12 mile challenge which will see swimmers swimming a mile on the hour every hour for 12 hours.

“Whatever time each swimmers finishes their mile in, the remainder of that hour will be a rest period, before they jump in for the next mile on the hour,” said organiser Mark de Klerk, who is teaming up with local events management company Swimming Plus to host the swim in Jeffreys Bay.

“This proves to be very challenging and when swimmers near the 7 mile mark, mental and physical fatigue start to kick in.

The idea is to mess with swimmers heads a little bit and get them to push them out of their comfort zone, hence getting in and out all the time. It becomes very unsettling,” added de Klerk.

The next swim is a 6 mile swim, this is for swimmers who do not feel they can complete a mile in the hour as per the 12 mile, so they will have the opportunity to swim every alternate mile of the 12 mile challenge, or they could do 6 miles in 6 hours. Same principle as the 12 mile challenge, just over a 6 hour period.

There will also be a 1 mile and 2 mile swim which will be run in the standard mile format.

‘We are very excited to bring the 12 miles in 12 hours series to the Eastern Cape and to be hosting the event in Jeffreys Bay,” said Brenton Williams from JBay Swim.

“Its going to be a tough event and I am sure Eastern Cape swimmers will rise to the challenge,” concluded Williams.
