Rebecca Newman was crowned as the Eastern Province 10 K swim champion after she won the official EP Aquatics championship event on Sunday at Marina Martinique, Jeffreys Bay.
The event formed part of the Metsi Open Water Swim Series which is held over the summer in Jeffreys Bay.
Conditions were not easy with a Westerly wind that gusted quite strongly at times. The water was 24 C in the pristine salt water canals of Marina Martinique.
Newman won the 10 K in a time of 2:33:24.
“I love swimming at Marina Martinique and had a relatively easy swim as the South African National Champs are next weekend and the EP Champs were a perfect build up, just one week out of the Nationals in Durban,” said Newman after her swim.
Dylan Smith won the men’s 3 K, which was also an EP Champs event from Nicholas Adam and Michael Mc Lennan in a time of 38:31.
Hannah Haswell won the women’s 3 K from Amy Mardon and Payton Horton. Haswell’s winning time was 40:06.
Veteran swimmer Byron Lockett won the men’s 5K in a time of 01:03:03 while Kirsten Marriot continued to dominate the women’s 5 K in the Eastern Province and won in 01:07:41.
Stefani le Roux won the 1K event in the women’s division with Murray Bailes winning the men’s division.
Nine year old Danre du Preez from Jeffreys Bay won the 500m swim in his first ever open water swim. His close friend MC Strydom came second.
