Electricity blackouts loom for South Africa

power linesAs temperatures begin to drop across the country, Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba, has warned South Africans to prepare for one of the toughest winters in years.

He has advised South Africans to conserve as much power as possible ahead of winter.

He was speaking in Kliptown Soweto yesterday, as part of the 49M energy saving campaign which coincided with Earth Hour.

Gigaba says Eskom’s electricity supply is strained due to the under-performance of power stations and floods in Mozambique.

Meanwhile, Eskom CEO, Brian Dames, says loadshedding has not been scheduled for this year’s winter.

He says if consumers reduce usage, countrywide blackouts can be avoided.

In 2008 the country had regular scheduled power outages in efforts to reduce pressure on electricity consumption.

Dames says saving energy is the responsibility of the entire country.
