Up and coming local surfer Dylan Lightfoot beat more fancied opponents when he won the surfing part of the Fox Surfer X in Durban yesterday.

Dylan who is an Xcel Pro invitee, came 9th last year and was determined to go all the way in 2010. The Fox Surfer X is an unique contest which sees entrants competing in both a surf contest and an Motor Cross race around a dirt track.

Dylan Lightfoot is making his way up the pecking order in South African surfing.

“I am super stoked with the win”, said Dylan. “We surfed Bronze Beach at Umhlanga Rocks and the waves were 2 -3 ft with both left and right peaks coming through. Now I must just keep it together on the motor bike and see what happens. The track is only 2 Km and really rutted but I have practiced the whole week and am amped for the riding”.

Meanwhile another local surfer is in Tahiti waiting for the start of the VonZipper trials at Teahupoo. Dale Staples, a Billabong sponsored surfer, says that Chope’s is heavy. “You have to pick the right wave because some of them just explode on the reef and end up closing out on dry reef. Ask me, I got eaten by one of them”, joked Dale.

Dale Staples is hoping to make it two in a row at Chope's after qualifying for the main event in J'Bay

“You have to paddle really hard for the wave and if you don’t get held up and you are on top of your tube riding you get slotted in a perfect barrel. It is the most insane wave I have ever ridden”.

The Tahiti Billabong Pro should start tomorrow and all of South Africa will be supporting Dale in his quest to make it though to the main event and join another South African, Jordy Smith who is the number one ranked surfer in the world and will be wanting another solid result after dominating the Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay.
