De Jager and Van Wyk claim victory at Marina Martinique

UP and coming St Francis Bay swimmer Amike De Jager dominated the 5km open water swim at Marina Martinique on Sunday when she won the event in a time of 1 hour 3 minutes.

This is well within the South African National qualifying time for the 5km swim, an event that will be swum at the World Swim Champs that are taking place next year.

The rain and 20°C water did little to deter De jager, who qualified for both the 10km and 5km events.

Veteran Jeffreys Bay swimmer JC Van Wyk won the men’s division, ensuring a clean sweep for local swimmers in the 5km swim.

Cape Town swimmer Rudolph Visser blitzed a time of 1:58:04 in the 10km swim and will be a name to watch at the SA Champs being held in March 2017.

Alan Searle (Humansdorp) won the 1km event in a time of 17 minutes, while 10-year- old Noah de Swart (JBay) had a great swim to finish third in his age group in a time of 17:28.

Anne De Swart rounded off a good showing from the local open water swimmers by claiming third place in her age group in the 1km event.

Swimmers are spoilt for choice with the Ocean Racing Series taking place at Hobie Beach on Sunday, with swims ranging from 1km, 2km and 3km.

The next event in Jeffreys Bay is Round 3 of the EC Swim Series which takes place on November 20. Online entries can be done via www.ecswim.co.za

Local swimmers train in Marina Martinique every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, starting at 17:15. All are welcome to join the club and train with the group, with various swim distanced on offer.

The club meets near the Marina Wharf restaurant.
