Local surfer Dale Staples who grew up surfing at Kitchen Window has had his first experience surfing one of the heaviest waves in the world – Teahupoo in Tahiti.

Dale has been invited to surf the VonZipper trial and will be attempting to qualify for the Billaong Pro that will follow the trial. Dale recently qualified for the Billabong in Jeffreys Bay by winning the VonZipper Superheat. He is also a J’Bay Xcel Pro invitee, one of only 16 local surfers who receive a coveted invitation to surf the event.

Describing Chope’s as a wave one does not mess with, Dale has had an imtimate meeting with the shallow reef and has broken two surfboards already.

Not a sight for the faint hearted.....Dale after a session at the meanest wave in the world.

Renowned big wave surfer Laird Hamilton has probably caught the biggest wave at Chope’s when he was towed onto a monster in 2006. It was a humbling experience for the big man as he was reduced to tears afer riding the wave. Footage of this session can be viewed below.
