The Democratic Alliance welcomes the decision of the North Gauteng High Court upholding the election of the DA’s Professor Annette Combrink as the Mayor of Tlokwe (Potchestroom).
This now allows Mayor Combrink and her team to enter their offices and ends the ANC’s attempts over the last month to make it impossible for the DA to begin delivering a stable, clean and efficient government in Tlokwe.
The Court dismissed former Tlokwe Mayor Maphetle Maphetle and Speaker Barei Segotso’s application to have the Tlokwe Council’s motion of no-confidence in them overturned.
The Court also ordered that the costs for the application be carried by the applicants (Maphetle and Segotso) in person, and not by the Tlokwe council.
The ruling means that the DA now officially governs Tlokwe, and will do so for the foreseeable future.
Tlokwe is the first municipality governed by the DA in the North West province.
This is an important moment in the continued growth of democracy across South Africa, and in the continued realignment of South African politics.
The DA governs in municipalities in five provinces, and in one provincial government.
