Before the event, which is co-santioned by the Sunshine Tour, Coetzee had recorded 24 top-10 finishes, but on the 25th occasion he made sure of victory, winning by three shots on 19-under-par 268 after closing with a six-under-par 66.
“You need a little bit of luck to win these things,” he told the Sunshine Tour website afterwards.
“On 15 I pulled my driver and that was the decider, because it should have gone into the water, but instead it hit a tree and bounced back into the fairway.
“You always have this plan in mind for yourself when you’re coming down the stretch and it never goes the way you think it will. I’m very happy to have finished the job,” he said.
With the Joburg Open serving as qualifying event for the new Open Qualifying Series, Coetzee also secured a place at this year’s Open Championship, which takes place at Royal Liverpool in July.
