The Nepalese government is demanding that Mount Everest climbers each bring 8kg of trash back down the mountain.
According to a report by the New York Times, Nepal will be setting up base camps with officials who will ensure that returning climbers are carrying 8kg of rubbish, excluding their own oxygen bottles and human waste.
Climbers who fail to comply will face penalties. It is hoped that the new initiative will result in the clean-up of eight tons of waste over the course of this year alone.
Authorities estimate that there are currently 50 tons of trash on the mountain.
