At 15h53 on Sunday 02 December Jeffreys Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach.
Robin Brown, NSRI Jeffreys Bay deputy station commander said that the NSRI Jeffreys Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched their craft and the SA Police Services, Kouga Law Enforcement, Paramedics 24/7 ambulance services, Kouga Fire and Rescue Services and Kouga Municipal Lifeguards also responded.
On arrival on-scene a 16 year old girl, from Port Elizabeth, was found on the beach. It appears that she had been rescued from the water by bystanders and she was treated by paramedics for symptoms of near drowning.
It was determined also that a 16 year old boy, from Port Elizabeth, had disappeared in the surf and a full scale search operation has revealed no sign of the teenager.
According to reports the two 16 year olds were part of a church group on the beach and they were wading in the surf together when a wave ‘dumped’ onto them causing them to get into difficulty.
