Two fires broke out almost simultaneously in Jeffreys Bay yesterday around lunchtime.
One of the fires caught alight between Mandela Bay and Marina Martinique, while the other threatened houses in Kabeljous.
The Jeffreys Bay Fire Department was first called out to the Mandela Bay fire and, despite the strong westerly winds fanning the flames, managed to bring the fire under control relatively quickly.
They then raced off to the Kabeljous fire which was being fought by local residents to try keep it away from the houses.
Fortunately this fire was also brought under control before any damage could be done to property, or lives put in danger.
The cause of the Kabeljous fire is unknown but it appears that young kids playing with matches and lighters in the bush caused the Mandela Bay fire.
The hot dry conditions have ensured that fires can start up easily and a good drenching rain is required to avert the risk.
