There is less than a month to go before the best surfers in the world will descend upon Jeffreys Bay for the 2011 Billabong Pro surf contest.
It will be hard to match up to last years event that was won by South African Jordy Smith. The contest was run in the first four days of the waiting period and there were excellent waves throughout.
Who will forget the chokka boats at the backline who came inshore to join the protest against the building of the nuclear power plant near Jeffreys Bay or the JBU and their vuvuzela’s supporting the South African surfers?
The fantastic atmosphere on the beach after Jordy Smith claimed a victory on South African soil will always be savoured by those lucky enough to have been there.
There has been plenty of good waves this winter in J’Bay and hopefully Supertubes will be cranking for the 2011 Billabong Pro. One thing can be guaranteed though – Jordy Smith will have the support of the local crew in his quest to retain his title as King of Supertubes.
