Small waves and a beautiful Cape Town morning greeted surfers competing in the Billabong Junior Series event this morning at Long Beach.
The event is the second in the three-part Junior series that takes place across the country, and it is also the 50th Billabong Junior Series event to take place in South Africa over the last 17 years.
Small, one to two-foot lefts and rights were the order of the day, with the occasional bigger pulse through the pushing tide.
Small wave wizardry was the performance standard, as the junior surfers did their best to execute high scoring moves and impress the judges in the shorebreak.
JBay locals Angelo and Joshe Faulkner were also both stand-outs in their heats, proving that growing up in surfing the best waves in South Africa does not hinder your surfing when it comes to ripping in small lefts.
“We’re very proud of the fact that we are here, running the 50th event in the series,” said Billabong South Africa Marketing Manager Chad D’Arcy.
“Billabong has worked very hard over the years with the junior surfers of our country and have invested a lot of time and positive energy into making the junior series a success.”
The event has a premier Pro Junior U20 Division, and the country’s top male and female junior surfers will be competing in this for international ASP points and prizemoney.
Apart from the points and prize money on offer for the winners of each division, there is also a full array of specialty prizes.
These include BOS product, a Nixon Winner-Takes-All engraved watch, DaKine product prizes, KR Fins, two custom-shaped Dennis Ellis boards, a 12-pair tray of VonZipper Sunglasses, Playstation prizes, Samsung Giveaways and Nixon Blasters.
