The DA wrote to the HRC after Education MEC Mandla Makhupula confirmed in a reply to our parliamentary question that 1 in 5 schools have inadequate sanitation or no toilets at all.
This is a human rights violation on an unprecedented scale, with an estimated 260 000 Eastern Cape children attending a school each day without proper sanitation facilities.
Billions are made available to fund Eastern Cape education every year and there is no reason why these backlogs could not have been addressed up until now.
Instead millions are wasted every year on maladministration while the dignity of hundreds of thousands of children in the Eastern Cape is undermined on a daily basis.
Every child should be able to go to a public school with dignity and get a quality education. We trust that the HRC will now conduct a thorough investigation into why so many learners go to public schools without toilets nearly 20 years into democracy.
